DESCRIPTION
Greyhounds are the supermodel athletes of the dog world. They are sleek, fast and a little temperamental.
HISTORY
Greyhound-like dogs have been in existince since the time of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman Empires. Bred in order to catch small animals for food, these dogs were valued for their speed and ability to chase small animals. In fact, they were so successful at chasing small animals that in England in the year 1014, laws were passed preventing Greyhounds from being allowed near Royal Forests.
In the 1800s, early American immigrants brought their Greyhounds with them and the sport of dog racing became incredibly popular, with the breed being further developed into a dog that could achiever higher and higher burts of speed over short distances.
While never a popular breed as a pet, these dogs have recently seen an increase in popularity as individuals have began rescuing Greyhounds that have been retired from racing.
TEMPERAMENT
Greyhounds are well-mannered, though somewhat reserved as pets. They do well as an indoor pet, provided they get enough exercise.
They can be timid and aloof around strangers and unfamiliar animals -- though they are quite sociable with their families.
